Whenever one hears about car maintenance the first thing that pops into your mind will probably be brakes, engine, tyres, AC, but never really exhausts. This is natural to think that way. However like the other mechanics of vehicles, exhaust is a key part of your car’s mechanics and requires timely checks. So, what are they ways to keep your car’s exhaust upbeat and keep the exhaust working the most efficient?

Look up and check your engine light
There are several reasons why your Engine Light may light up. Most of them are related to the car’s emissions system. In most cases if the light is on there probably is a problem. The on-board diagnostics (OBD) system is made to check components in your engine and exhaust system. And raise alerts when things begin to deteriorate. At times it can even throw indications for small issues like a dirty sensor, or major issues such as engine misfires, failed oxygen sensors, and bad catalytic converters. This is when you must get the code checked. It’s probably a good idea to get any engine light checked by a mechanic.
Mending leaks
Your car’s exhaust is bound to experience pressure, high heat and heavy vibration. Which is why there are reasons for a leak to occur in several parts of the Exhaust system. The most likely part where a leak could occur is the exhaust manifold. It could either crack, or begin leaking. Leaks also tend to develop at many connecting points of the system which are usually locked with gaskets. Regular servicing means a mechanic will check these points often and take steps accordingly.
Check for connected components
The car’s exhaust is reliant on several other parts of the engine to work smoothly and efficiently. Which is why these components need to function right at all times.
For example, exhaust hangers are important to fasten the pipes on the underside of the car or vehicle, and they tend to get damaged easily. What this leads to is the system starts sagging, and increase the pressure on other parts of the car. So make sure if you have broken hangers, bolts or any other element that needs attention then get it fixed stat.
Rust and corrosion
Rusting issues are pretty common for car exhausts. This is caused due to moisture reacting with iron and steel and forming iron oxide. When this happens? It happens on old vehicles, metal doesn’t stay rust free for ever. Another reason for rust could be its location to the coastal areas which has more salt laden areas.
Taking care of your exhaust isn’t a tough job. All you need to do is regular checks followed by counteractive measures. If you follow a regular maintenance schedule for your car or vehicle you should not have too many problems as your mechanic will check all these issues, but if you don’t get your car regularly services then you should make sure you check your exhaust and exhaust system every so often.
